Here’s a brief Q&A to get to know them better…
Q: Tell us about who you are and your mission.
A: Red Canary Magazine was created to fill a crucial gap in journalism: telling urgent environmental stories with integrity, depth, and impact. We believe that powerful storytelling, rooted in truth-seeking independent journalism, can drive meaningful change vital to our democracy.
The name “Red Canary” is symbolic. The canary represents both vigilance and joy, a reminder to raise our voices, sustain communities, and inspire action. And to sing.
Our contributors have written for The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and many more national and international publications. We are award-winning journalists, filmmakers, photographers, poets, and artists committed to transforming information into wisdom and wisdom into action, inspiring positive change and responsible stewardship of our planet, our home, and our communities.
We believe journalism is a civic duty, with a responsibility to inform, engage, and challenge; to uncover what’s hidden, amplify what matters, and hold power to account. We tell the stories that matter without fear, favor, or compromise.
Our mission is to produce difference-making work, focused on urgent environmental and social issues, that provokes discussion, inspires reflection and speaks to the times with compelling storytelling that is timeless.
Q: What types of writing are you looking for?
A: Short fiction and poetry.
Q: You’re based in LA but appear to focus on environmental issues globally. Are there any issues or regions that you are looking to focus on in the years ahead?
A: We actually are based in LA and Minneapolis, but as you noticed, we focus on issues all over, primarily stateside. We plan to continue spotlighting environmental issues affecting communities, especially groups being overlooked.
Q: Anything I didn’t ask but should have?
A: We’ve been recognized by our peers for our reporting and coverage. Among the 19 professional awards we’ve won are from the Society of Professional Journalists, LA Press Club and the Society of Environmental Journalists, as well as a few Webbys. We’re looking to increase awards in the fiction and poetry pieces we publish.
We also believe in supporting the next generation of journalists. We publish stories written by journalism students and are continually looking for ways to help train and engage with them.
